The POVERTY

Unemployment is extremely high, especially in the Kherson region, where most of the factories closed down years ago. The reality is that the large majority of the citizens of Ukraine are extremely poor and, as a result, have little or no ability to provide for a family. Because of the hopelessness brought on by severe poverty, many spend what little money they get on alcohol. This results in domestic abuse, with children usually being the ultimate victims.

The health plight of the street kids and orphans is another serious problem. Young children living on the streets find food anywhere they can, often from trash cans and dumpsters, much of which is spoiled and leads to salmonella poisoning, among other things. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases is increasing at an alarming rate, as is drug and alcohol abuse. Another goal of UCAF is to invite doctors and dentists from the USA and Europe to provide volunteer medical assistance and, where available, basic medical supplies.

Another health problem is that of tuberculosis. A large number of orphans in the sanitaria have open TB, which in some areas is taking the lives of hundreds of children each year.

Cancer is another big problem, with the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl being a major contributor. The Children’s Cancer Hospital in Kyiv (the capital city of Ukraine) often lacks even the most basic of health care supplies, i.e. latex gloves, catheters, personal care items (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc.). On several occasions, Kelley and Ring have arranged donations of these items and delivered them to the hospital, along with small gifts for the children.
